The Theater is one of the structures of the Tangier association Darna, with multiple ramifications, which seeks to promote through local development initiatives the reappropriation by “street children” of living spaces, expression and learning of their rights and duties. Founded by a collective of citizens in 1995, this association has developed, year after year, in several districts of the city. The first premises made available to these excluded young people was a day center in Foundak Chejra, a very popular district of Tangier, on the outskirts of the old medina, which already offered a gathering place in the most total anarchy (to sleep , to eat and sometimes to wash) to the marginalized of the city. These are, with the port, the city center, the medina and the outlying districts, the main transit spaces for these wandering populations.
In this day center, the various actors of Darna have collected information on the origins , the survival patterns and desires of these children; following this study, different structures were created:
The Refuge offers accommodation, food and hygiene to around forty children on average, between 8 and 17 years old.
The Community Youth Center (MCJ), succeeding at the day centre, functions as a vocational training school and provides, in addition to informal education, courses in carpentry, ironwork, bakery and textile manufacture. It brings together between 120 and 150 children (aged 8 to 17), depending on the year and time of year. It counts among its staff both the children of the shelter and others, from different districts of Tangier, who have dropped out of school for various reasons (odd jobs selling on the sly, guides and beggars, maids or servants), and who have become not “street children” because they have a home, but children “in the street”. The refuge and the MCJ are attached, in the Hafa district, to the Marshan. The youngest children, after a refresher course, are reintegrated into the national education circuit and followed throughout their schooling.
The Educational Farm located in the countryside of Tangier teaches about thirty young people (from more than 14 years) the trades of the land with a view to reintegrating them into farms, nurseries… thus fighting against the phenomenon of rural exodus.
The Community House for Women (MCF) located at Place du Grand Socco offers women over the age of 16 a literacy program and training: modern and traditional textile production, secretarial work, aesthetics, hairdressing, catering, etc. Within this structure, women also work to learn about their rights.
And the Darna Theater located, as was the day center, in the Foundak Chejra district, near the Grand Socco, below a former Spanish school, now a Moroccan public school.
