We arrive at the Medina of Fez. I accompany my host through narrow streets, clearing a passage among high grayish walls, steeped in history. We stop in front of a heavy wooden door carved. There, my host invites me to enter. After a few steps in the half-light of a hallway, I stop… seized with admiration! A patio of great beauty, wide open to the sky, stands before my eyes. Sumptuous white “laces”, shaped in the stucco , decorate the walls.
At my feet, like a carpet, white and blue mosaics from Fez recount, with emotion, the life of yesteryear in the old oriental residences. In the center, in the shade of decorated orange trees of their fruits, gently hums a fountain…perhaps for a beautiful Scheherazade behind its moucharabiehs…who knows? its Moroccan sweetness of life.
Everything here invites you to relax and dream! The cozy atmosphere of the lounges, the dimmed lights of the copper lamps, the peaceful charm of the patio, the authentic and refined decorations of the rooms, a thousand painted or sculpted arabesques… a whole oriental way of life, without a doubt!
And the Ryad Alya has no never cease to amaze us! Picturesque stairs lead to a majestic terrace offering a breathtaking view of the Medina of Fes and the surrounding mountains which enshrine it in their setting.
The Ryad Alya! Eastern Palace? Oasis in the heart of the Medina? A bit of both, of course! But, above all, it is the dream of a child of the Medina, in love with authenticity, which has become, quite simply, reality.
