We first visited Essaouira in 2005 and started renting Wahed the following year. We opened Zhuzh and Tlata in 2010.
In 2011 we set up 91 Projects, a UK registered charity – which aims to help young people in Essaouira improve their prospects for education and life. ‘job.
Examples of our work include free French and English lessons for local youth; funding for two hairdressing apprenticeship programs; upcycling clothes’ workshops with local women; and small grants to local families to help them keep their children in the education system.
We opened the Project 91 Charity Shop at 10 Rue Tetouan, Essaouira in August 2014. Here we sell the best of second-hand clothes donated by our Leave your wardrobe in the countryside of Morocco. 100% of our profits go to charity.
At the Project 91 depot, opposite Dar 91, we sell the rest – and do ‘boucherouite’ lisettes on any clothes we can’t sell. We also provide space for young locals to try out business ideas.
On the ground floor of the Dar 91 building is Mashi Mushki (in the local dialect, ‘no problem’), our gallery/shop . Here we sell art, textiles, rugs, bags, jewelry, scarves and other handmade goods. We donate a minimum of 10% of Dar 91 and Mashi Mushki’s profits to Project 91, each year.
