The Ryad Mabrouka is a building of traditional construction with thick adobe walls built around a central patio opening onto a garden with the advantages and disadvantages of this type of architecture in ecological matters.
The two largest energy consumption items are air conditioning and heating. Our two biggest challenges to reduce this consumption are to maintain the freshness in summer and to prevent the night cold from cooling the riad in winter.
The experience acquired over the years as well as a rigorous management of air flows in the riad has enabled us to meet these challenges by taking full advantage of the advantages of traditional architecture with its good thermal inertia:
The mobile “canopy” that covers the patio is only partially open in summer to create an air intake intended to evacuate hot air and considerably reduce air conditioning needs (principle of Middle Eastern wind towers).
The “canopy” and the large bay window are closed in winter to benefit from the greenhouse effect.
The staff has been trained in strict management of door, window and bay window openings to prevent hot air inlets in summer and cold air inlets at night in winter.
