The House of Photography in Marrakech opened in May 2009. The objective pursued by its founders – Patrick Manac’h, Hamid Mergani – was twofold:
– To constitute a photographic archive, essentially on the Morocco
– Show this collection in Morocco.
The House of Photography in Marrakech is therefore a Moroccan cultural structure. We hope to be a bridge of wonder, of understanding, between the two shores of the Mediterranean.
Building such a collection, photograph by photograph, researched with passion, mainly in France, was in itself an exciting adventure. We have collected several thousand photographs, documents, postcards, glass plates…
Sharing these fragile testimonies with visitors, creating a Garden for a muse, has become a magnificent raison d’être in Marrakech.
We only show original documents, with the exception of large exhibition prints, made on matte paper. The exhibitions change regularly, maintaining the general theme which is a linear theme, from 1870 to 1950: the first ages of photography in Morocco, then the modern period, from 1910 to the work of Studio Souissi. The visitor can also see the Müller donation. Finally, thanks to our friend Daniel Chicault, with us since the creation of this place, we permanently broadcast “Landscapes and Faces of the High Atlas”, the first color documentary on the Seksawa Berbers. A room of autochromes completes the visit to the exhibition.
The Maison de la Photographie is an autonomous structure, legally and financially.
Only guests who have booked can leave a review.
