Craftsmanship plays a very important role in the economy of the province of Ouarzazate and represents one of the fundamental characteristics of the daily life of this city. Thanks to grants, national and international, several cooperatives and corporations have emerged. Thus a wide variety of products, based on wood, metal, wool, clay, stone, copper and bone, has developed and whose work has improved a lot but while keeping its authenticity.
Among the activities artisanal, weaving is the oldest in ouarzazate. The carpet or “Tazarbit”, woven practically in all the surrounding villages of Ouarzazate, is intended for domestic but also commercial use.
Weaving for these regions is an ancestral know-how that is transmitted at home and within the same family. Indeed, the mother introduces her daughter to the making of a carpet as she introduces her to the culinary arts. For her part, the young weaver must be able to memorize a technique, a know-how, must also internalize the decorative motifs and must above all have a taste for colors and its ranges.
The carpet, from Ouarzazate and its regions, is recognized by the quality of its wool, by the brilliance of its colors, and by its small size. The wife takes care of the weaving and the modeling of the carpets and the husband takes care of the marketing in the weekly markets, and makes, in return, the purchase of the food products and other products which they need to live. The carpet is a rather Berber-speaking tradition because it is in southern Morocco, in the High and Middle Atlas, that the carpet has flourished (under the name: Tazarbit).
The perfection of this work of significant art of a plural culture, and ancestral knowledge, is one of the daily concerns of families in these regions. The Ait Ouaouzguit Center is one of the main cradles of this artisanal production.
This world-renowned Center is located in the High Atlas, where carpet making predominates.
As a high place of Handicrafts in general and carpets in particular, Ait Ouaouzguit is in turn composed of several production points and in particular: Tamassin, Ait Semgane, Ait Ougharda, Taznakht, Ait Douchen, Znaga and Sektana as border points. The Ouarzazate region has two main cooperatives: The Ouarzazate Cooperative and The Taznakht Cooperative.
